1. Could you tell us about your recent works of creation?
How's Hong Kong people's reaction to the work?
My recent work is Samsung promotion ad and just before it was the Extravaganza card face and promotional item-tote bag.
Many people can recognize my style and even my classmate back in school told me they could tell when they saw it on the newspaper and magazines. It is good that both jobs have my name credited as well.
2. When did you start creating any artwork?
How did you start your career?
I started to do illustration when I was in the university, doing freelance illustration work for some magazines. Then in 2003, I quitted my full time job and work with my boyfriend-photographer. We share the same studio now.
3. What kind of things or moments turn to be the source of your inspiration? Is there any event inspiring you lately?
I get inspiration from all the beautiful things, I especially like dollies, toys and old cartoon books. Anything fun, cute and weird catch my sight.
4. You draw various types of girls/ladies. How come did you choose "girl" as the main motif in your creation?
I guess I am a girl as well and a little child inside. All the girls in the drawings are different part of me, and I also hope all the girls in this world to share the same dream and hope. We all love beautiful and peaceful world.
5. Girls in your artwork look sweet and also elegant. What is the ideal woman for you like?
Yes, girls should be sweet and I hope to create something happy and positive, and I hope people will put a smile on their faces when they look at these lovely girls and make their days wonderful, like meeting a fairy!
6. Let me ask you about your works with Anna Sui. How did you start working for Anna Sui? What kind of image did you have for Anna Sui at first?
Was there any specific theme or common image for your creation for Anna Sui?
I entered a contest of dolly face makeover and won the first prize which was the trip to New York, then I was arranged to meet Anna Sui. I shown her my work and she liked them, then she invited me to do some illustration for her tees. I guess we both like a lot of decorative goodies. She likes girly stuffs, little houses and antiques, flea market objects, and all those 70's lovely things.
7. Who is your favorite artist (in any genre)?
Saul Steinberg, Michael Ffolkes, Kass Janos, Margaret Keane, and all the Big Eyes Artists, Herve Morvan, Mirano Fujita, Macoto, AAquirax Uno, Rune etc
8. What would you like to share with your audience through your works?
I hope to bring happiness and hope to audience. I think we are living in a world with lot of despair and sadness, all sort of negativities, deep down in my heart I still believe in real virtue - truth, kindness and beauty. I hope to bring this message to the world or at least make their everyday lives happier.
9. Could you choose one from your work especially you like or very impressive to you? Please tell us reason, too.
I would like to share with the audiences about the illustrations I did last year for the cat show,"Prince and Fairy", which was a fund raising event for the animals. I also wrote a love story about the prince and the fairy. This is a mixed Buddha's story and my idea. The work is a salute to all the animals lovers and Big Eyes Artists.
10. What do you think of creative scene in Hong Kong now?
How do you want to be involved in it?
I think there are many creative people in HK and most of them have international level regarding their work, ways of seeing, attitudes etc, but still the big corporate or company really hold back the creativity as they have the power to control the market of buying what and not accept what. That's a pity! I hope they will let go of this and learn to trust as well as respect the creative people of their profession.
I would still like to get involved if there is any interesting project holding in Hong Kong but probably I may start not to involve as much as before and would put my focus on other places if possible.
11. What kind of works do you want to create in the future?
Is there any plan for next creation?
Commercially, I hope to do some more cross over with different brands, artists, to see the big people doing big project. Also I want to be a mixture of artist and illustrator. Artist alone maybe too far fetched, subjective and difficult to understand, but illustrator is also too commercial without personal opinion. Better be both.
Ideally, like no. 8 answer, I want to create more work with message of truth, kindness and beauty. I don't want to be just an illustrator who draw pretty things. I think it is time for us to give back to this world, to make a beautiful world not only fashion, graphis design, interior design or decoration stuffs, but the inner side of it, I also want to help this world through my work. My target is animals right, that's why I designed the animal-stickers. The promotion card etc hope to bring more message to people.
