1. Could you tell us about your recent works of creation? How's Hong Kong people's feedback to the work?
My second comic book: Biu Tung Wa Jap (Psychic's fairy tales) had just been published at July. And the result is quite good, the first edition had been sold out and 2nd edition is now printing. The general feedback I can heard about is my book making them laugh.
2. What was your introduction into the world of creation?
Jobless. I mean when working in commercial art field It is hard to be creative(well, may be I was not working hard enough). After years I find the designer job is not suitable to me, I want to draw and tell stories. So I quit my job and work at home for my own creation. And being poor(without income) is the origin of energy, it create a kind of thrust to push myself. Thus comes the birth of my first comic novel:"How blue was my valley".
3. How come did you choose comic as media of your creation?
Instead of making movie, I find comic as a good media for telling story through visual images. And I am ok for drawing, so I choose to make comic for story-telling.
4. Who is your favorite comic artist?
Many. Funny thing is I am now reading Osamu Tezuka's "Hinotori". Yes, I say this not because you are from Japan but not until now I find "Hinotori" very much a masterpiece. It was created decades ago but I've just read it recently. Don't know why I'd been ignoring his comic and never realize his greatness. From "Hinotori" I re-discover the joy of reading comics, which can be rarely experienced nowadays. Yet to be impressed to think of the meaning of life.
5. What kind of events, things or moments turns to be the source of your inspiration?
News reported in newspaper, television, web I surf in every day.
6. What would you like to tell your readers/audience through your works?
I am not intended to "tell" anything. I just hope readers/audience to have fun while reading my comics.
7. Your use of color is very characteristic and impressive. It seems that you draw with various kinds of tools. What kind of tools would you mainly use? Is there any your favorite style these days?
My hands......ok, thats not funny. I didn't focus on one single tools/media, sometimes I create my art piece in computer, using Adobe Illustrator, drawing on a digital drawing broad. Sometimes I draw with acrylics, or pen and ink, or water-colour. Most recently I am quite fond of using "ball-pen". I try to use colour in an unconventional way, especially on human figure. U know chinese people usually say: if the colour of yr skin turn blue, it means u re being bad luck. I always reject such superstition, and so project my character in blue or green, and so far none of my character has died.......haha.
8. Could you choose one from your work especially you like or very impressive to you? Please tell us reason, too.
The "tree". It was to be made for a magazine. I somehow find the joy of drawing by using a simple, cheap ball-pen. Although my hand is so tried after rushing to finish it within one single day. It is so far the best one I ever created(I mean by my own standard). On that day I made it without any break, it is rarely happened to me, since I easily lose my focus when drawing, I will break for a little rest, grab some food, go toilet, play Xbox game, surfing porn web................and for this one I had never been so focusing(may be it is urgent), so I feel I had been a good boy(just for one time).
9. What do you think of creative scene in Hong Kong now?
Vivid. But someone following world trend, lacking local character.
10. What kind of works do you want to create in the future? Is there any plan for next creation?
I want to keep making graphic novel, that the only thing I wish to dedicate my life for. I am planning to create story about Hongkong colonial history, start from British arrival at 1841 till 1997. But Hongkong people is funny, they claim they won back national pride by gaining back Hongkong from colonial rule, but in their heart they are being nostalgic for the golden era of the past. So I might think it is interesting to make some stories about the "golden era". It is suppose to be a serious project requiring a lot of research and study, I am not sure when it is able to start and finish. I try to keep this in mind in the following time. Hope this dream will be fulfilled.
11. At last, could you give any message to people seeing your work in Japan?
"Arigato"ありがとう. And please kindly leave me comment. In fact, since, my work is so "ocal", I wonder reader from overseas will understand it. So comment is really necessary.
